Forecasting shipping costs
A provider of high-tech custom-engineered parts and equipment wanted to improve their ability to forecast shipping costs. Their products can weigh several tons, and shipping costs are a significant variable in the business model for their products and services. What’s more, calculating these costs required accessing third-party shipping service APIs, which slowed processing times and frustrated business users.
The team collaborated with SDG’s data engineers and data scientists to take on this challenge. Through state-of-the art data engineering practices and predictive analytics techniques, the team built a model for third-party shipping prices. They then processed new requests against this model and optimized the output. Using this novel technique, the team was able to predict shipping costs within a variance of only 5 cents from the actual costs. The solution improved user experience, reduced processing costs and times, and kept the company ahead of stiff competition.
