The Quest for Workplace Wellness

Over the past year at sdg, I have been fortunate to be a part of a very fun internal committee that promotes wellness for our employees and their families (yes, I used the words "fun" and "committee" in the same sentence). The committee is called sdgFIT, where the FIT stands for "Finding Inspiration Together." The "fun" that I mentioned above has been the ongoing ways that we have determined what that FIT acronym really means when creating wellness events and activities for employees. It certainly helps when you have a great group of people on your committee and you spend most meetings laughing while still getting things done!

"Wellness" is quite a buzzword these days, and organizations have implemented numerous approaches to promote wellness amongst their employees. A few of these include health club reimbursements based on number of visits (which sdg does--very cool) or obtaining discounts on health insurance premiums by getting an annual physical and knowing your blood pressure readings and cholesterol level.

Our quest was not in that vein -- it was a different type of quest. To borrow a phrase from Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) in the movie "Vacation," it was a quest for fun (you can search for this classic diatribe on YouTube---warning, strong language). How can we get employees, their families and even their friends together to talk wellness, do some type of activity, get moving, learn something new, and have fun? After all, getting an annual physical with your doctor may be a good idea... but it isn't exactly fun.

So, how would we associate wellness with fun? And remembering our FIT acronym from above, how would we "Find Inspiration" around wellness "Together" and really enjoy it? Ah, the quest began.

Via great ideas from committee members and from employees throughout the company (you go, sdg), we were pleased to host the following events and programs in 2013: An intro to yoga, tennis lessons and tournament (for kids and adults), a session with a Life Coach, a book club discussion on Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss, and an intro to Kung Fu. We also provided exercise tips, nutrition info, and healthy recipes as part of our employee intranet site and an internal email that is sent to all employees.

I hope if you've read this far you might be wondering what’s on tap for 2014. So far we’ve planned yoga sessions in January, a Healthy Cooking & Wine Pairings Class in February, a forum on positive parenting/raising children in April, a 5K/beer run in May, a kickball game/tournament in August, and a Life Coach session titled "Living on Purpose" in October.

Needless to say, it’s going to be a great 2014. Come be FIT with us!
